  1. Visas / Work Permits & Medical Insurance

To legally work in UAE, you need a valid work visa and medical insurance. Legally, your employer has to provide this and will handle most of the paperwork. Ensure you understand the visa process and any obligations, such as medical examinations (which will take place in UAE) or document authentication, required before your move. If you meet golden visa eligibility criteria, you can sponsor spouse and dependants, find out more about this here.

  2. Opening a UAE Bank Account

This process may take a few weeks to complete, so ensure you have your documents ready. To open a bank account in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), you’ll need to provide the following documents:

    • Proof of ID: A valid passport or national identity card
    • Proof of residency: A copy of your visa page, or a utility bill, rental agreement, or title deed
    • Proof of salary: A salary certificate or statement from your employer
    • Emirates ID: Some banks may ask for your Emirates ID card, but you can usually provide this later
    • Other documents: Depending on the bank, you may also need to provide a recent utility payment receipt, a letter of recommendation from another bank, or a UAE mobile number

  3. Living Costs

Whilst the UAE offer tax-free income, the cost of living can be high. Housing, schooling, and healthcare are significant expenses to account for. However, did you know that cities such as Dubai are actually cheaper to rent in than New York and London? Ensure you research the average costs for accommodation, transportation, groceries, and leisure activities to budget effectively!

  4. Employment Contracts

Carefully review your employment contract, including salary, benefits, working hours, and end-of-service gratuity. Understanding the terms of your contract ensures clarity on your rights and responsibilities and helps avoid potential disputes.

  5. Commuting

Similar to most cities, you will be able to commute to work using taxis, the metro or even a private car (however these are more on the costly side). Taxis are available on apps such as Careem, or you can flag them down in the street, and the metro has 49 operations stations, making it a popular choice for a lot of people.
